That said, the BFR cylinder was designed for cartridges like the 45-70, which is much longer then the S&@ 500.However, the Remington Managed Recoil .30-30 125 grain/2175 fps MV (100 yard KPS 12.9) and .357 Magnum (Rifle) 158 grain/1830 fps MV (100 yard KPS 12.7) loads are probably better guides to the minimum practical killing power for Class 2 game with more modern cartridges.

The .500 has a bit larger frontal area. The .45/70 operates at lower pressure and the bullets have a bit better sectional density. Both shine as short to mid-range thumpers in my opinion. I rather liked my combination of the .45/70 Marlin lever gun and the .500 S&W revolver.
